New Website for 2010 – 2011 School Year

It’s that time of year again. Start of a new school year, start of a new class website.

If you’re looking for resources for Mr. Rock’s US History class at East Orange Campus High School, you’re almost in the right place. This is an old website for the 2008 – 2009 school year.

Go to the 2009 – 2010 Website

This website was the official classroom website/resource for the 2008 – 09 school year. While some of the assignments have remained the same, I will be creating a new version of the website specifically for the 2009 – 10 school year. If you’re looking for information about Mr. Rock’s class for 2009 – 10 then head over to the 2009 – 10 class site.

Final Exam Review

Next week, we will take final exams.

  • Periods 1, 2, and 3 are scheduled for Tuesday, June 16th.
  • Periods 4, 5, and 6 are scheduled for Wednesday, June 17th.
  • Periods 7, 8, and 9 are scheduled for Thursday, June 18th.

In class, you should have received three separate review sheets: Chapter 10 (Final Review), Chapter 11 (Final Review), and Chapter 12 (Final Review).

In addition, you received two essay prompts for the Final Exam (these are on the Chapter 11 portion of the review).  Complete one of these essay questions and bring it with you the day of the exam.

  • As a result of the Civil War, how did the United States change politically, economically, and socially?  Be sure to discuss each of these three areas.
  • During the time period 1865 to 1877, how was the United States reconstructed?  Be sure to discuss three different areas or approaches to Reconstruction with specific supporting examples.

Chapter 12 Test

Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 10) we will take a test on Chapter 12 and the various issues related to Reconstruction.

If you did not get a copy of the Chapter 12 Test Review in class, download it and review the questions.  We did not play Review Jeopardy, so there is no game to downlod for this chapter.

The essay prompt is:

The period of Reconstruction (1865 – 1877) was characterized, in part, by a great extension of political and civil rights to African Americans. However, many of these rights were taken away as a system of segregation was set up that would last until the Civil Rights movement of the 1950′s and 1960′s.

Why did Reconstruction come to an end in 1877? Be sure to discuss at least three factors leading to the end of Reconstruction.

Remember, this is the same question that you should have outlined in (CW 12.3) Outline: The End of Reconstruction.  Also, remember that you should bring that classwork assignment with you on Wednesday and hand it in after the test.

Finally, remember that you must complete an essay in order to receive a grade for the test.  Skipping the essay is not an option.

(Quiz 12.1) Economic Effects of the Civil War

[Note: Students in Period 5 did not have to complete this quiz.]

Today we took a map quiz related to the economic effects of the Civil War.

Although you don’t necessarily need to memorize anything, you should be familiar with what states were part of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.  Try looking through Chapter 10 and 11 of your book to construct a list, or look online for a source.

If you were absent today, you must arrange a time to make up the quiz during your free period or after school.

(CW 12.3) Outline: The End of Reconstruction

Today, we discussed how to properly outline an essay.

Together, we created an outline answering the following question: “How did the government reconstruct the South during the time period 1865 to 1877?”

The sample outline looked something like this:

  • Introduction
    • Background information about Civil War/Reconstruction
    • Thesis Statement
  • The government attempted to rebuild the economy of the South…
    • They helped businesses
    • The Bank Act helped stabilize the money supply.
    • Public Works Programs helped rebuild roads and railroads in the South.
  • The government extended political rights to African Americans…
    • The 13th Amendment abolished slavery.
    • The 14th Amendment granted African Americans citizenship.
    • The 15th Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote.
  • The government politically reconstructed the South by bringing the Southern states back into the Union.
    • Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan
    • Johnson’s Plan – Presidential Reconstruction
    • Congressional Reconstruction and the Reconstruction Act of 1867
  • Conclusion
    • Restate/summarize
    • Conclude: Was it successful?

The classwork assignment for today and tomorrow is to create a similar outline for a different question.  The outline should follow the same format.  You should have three general reasons that answer the question, and each of these reasons should be supported by three specific examples.

The question is:  “Why did Reconstruction come to an end in 1877?”

Although this assignment should have completed by the end of Friday, it will not be collected until next week.  Keep it with you and bring it the day of the test (June 3).  You may use it to help you write the essay on the test, and you should hand your outline in after completing the test for a separate classwork grade.

(Project 12.1) Illustrating the Effects of Reconstruction

Monday and Tuesday, we worked on a short project about Reconstruction.  The goal was to select on effect of Reconstruction, illustrate it, summarize it, and explain it to the class.

First, choose a topic.  Look in Chapter 12, Section 2.  Choose one of the red sub-headings.  All of the information contained in that subheading is your topic.  For example, “Public Works Program” is one topic.

Then, read your topic and develop an understanding of the key points.  Create an illustration (hand-drawn, colored, on a regular sized piece of copy paper) that highlights these key points.

Third, write a paragraph in which you summarize the key points of your topic and explain how your illustration conveys these key points.

(CW 12.2) Effects of Reconstruction

In class today, we viewed presentations about the effects of reconstruction. Each group illustrated one effect of Reconstruction and then explained if it was a positive or negative effect – and why.

The classwork assignment for the day was an exit card. You were to write down three examples of positive effects of Reconstruction.  This information was based on the presentations from class.

If you were absent, you will have to do something slightly different.

Explain three positive effects of Reconstruction (look in Ch. 12, Sec. 2).  For each one, write a full paragraph in which you summarize the effect and explain why it is a good thing.

The full written assignment should therefore be three individual paragraphs.
